A Korean multi balm stick is basically a solid, waxy moisturizer you swipe on as the very last step, or tap over makeup when skin feels tight. It’s great at sealing in moisture. What it is not: a concentrated PDRN treatment, even when “PDRN” is printed big on the cap.
Quick answer
- Use it last, over your serum and moisturizer, morning or night.
- Over makeup, tap, don’t drag, on dry spots like cheekbones and smile lines.
- Read the label from the top. In the PDRN stick we checked, the first 10 ingredients are oils, butters and waxes; sodium DNA (PDRN) is #27 of 27.
- Skip it on freshly treated, broken or inflamed skin, and check for retinol before using one on a sensitive day.
What a “multi balm” actually is
In Korea, the 멀티밤 (multi balm) is its own product category: a lipstick-shaped tube of solid balm you can use on the face, under the eyes, on the neck, on lips and on cuticles. It took off in Korea around 2020, when everyone was masked up and stuck indoors with dry, tight skin. Korean beauty-review app Glowpick later named the multi balm one of the biggest trends of 2021.
Since then almost every Korean skincare brand has made one. The newest wave puts PDRN (polydeoxyribonucleotide, the DNA-fragment ingredient Korean clinics made famous) front and center. Three you’ll see on US shelves and in Seoul:
- KAHI Wrinkle Bounce Multi Balm (9g): the original. Its key ingredient is listed as salmon DNA (PDRN), alongside Jeju botanicals.
- VT PDRN Essence Stick Balm (9.5g): sold as a plant-derived, ginseng-based PDRN, with peptides and ceramide NP.
- Medicube PDRN Pink Collagen Volume Multi Balm (10g): PDRN plus Volufiline, collagen and a small amount of retinol.
How Koreans use a multi balm stick (3 moves)

1. As the last step of your routine
A balm is an occlusive: it forms a film that slows water loss. That means it works best on top of something hydrating, not on bare dry skin. KAHI’s own directions say to glide it on “as the final step of your morning or night routine.” VT says the same, and adds the eye area, neck, lips and dry patches.
- Toner or essence
- Serum (this is where a real PDRN serum belongs)
- Moisturizer
- Multi balm on dry zones only
- Sunscreen in the morning (let the balm settle a minute first, and keep balm light on sunscreen areas)
2. Midday, over makeup: tap, never drag
This is the use most US reviews skip. KAHI’s own instruction is to “gently tap (never drag) over makeup.” Dragging a waxy stick across foundation or cushion moves the makeup around and can leave streaks. Press it lightly on the high points that dry out by 3 p.m.: cheekbones, under the eyes, smile lines.
3. Overnight “spot mask” on flaky areas
KAHI suggests building 2–3 layers on dry areas before bed. Think sides of the nose, chin, or the edges of the lips: spots that flake in winter even when the rest of your face is fine.
You’re mostly buying a really good occlusive. Judge the base, not the hero word on the cap.
How much PDRN is really in a PDRN balm stick?
Here’s the part that surprised us. We read the full ingredient list (INCI) of the VT PDRN Essence Stick Balm, as published by a US retailer. It has 27 ingredients. Sodium DNA, the INCI name for PDRN, is listed last: #27 of 27.

Ingredient lists run from highest to lowest concentration, and anything under about 1% can be listed in any order at the end. So the top of the list tells you what you’re really putting on your face. In this stick, the first ten are octyldodecanol, sunflower seed oil, a plant-sterol ester, shea butter, synthetic wax, microcrystalline wax and similar texture ingredients. The soothers and peptides (bisabolol, adenosine, ceramide NP, copper tripeptide-1) sit in the middle.
That’s not a scandal. It’s just how stick balms work: you need lots of oil and wax to make a solid that glides. But it does mean a balm stick is not a substitute for a PDRN serum, where the ingredient sits in a water-based formula meant to be the active step. Use the stick for comfort and moisture; get your “PDRN step” from a serum or ampoule.
Not every brand shows a full list on its product page. KAHI’s US site highlights salmon-derived PDRN as a key ingredient but didn’t show the full INCI when we checked, so look at the box before you buy.

When to leave the balm in your bag
- Right after a skin treatment. On freshly lasered, needled or injected skin, follow your clinic’s instructions. A stick rubbed straight onto raw skin adds friction, and the same stick has touched your face many times before. Clean fingers and a gentle cream make more sense for the first days. (Our Rejuran aftercare guide walks through it day by day.)
- On a retinol balm when your skin is irritated. Medicube itself warns to avoid irritated skin and eye contact, wear sunscreen daily, and avoid retinoids during pregnancy.
- On active breakouts. Heavy oil-and-wax films aren’t for everyone. If you’re acne-prone, keep the balm to dry zones, not your T-zone.
Hygiene tip: a stick touches your skin directly every time. Wipe the top with a clean tissue now and then, keep the cap on, and don’t share it.

FAQ
Do you put a multi balm before or after moisturizer?
After. It’s an occlusive, so it goes last (before sunscreen in the morning) to seal in what’s underneath.
Can I use a multi balm over makeup?
Yes, that’s one of its main uses in Korea. Tap it on lightly; dragging moves your base.
Is a PDRN balm stick as good as a PDRN serum?
They do different jobs. In the stick we checked, PDRN is the last ingredient and oils and waxes lead. Treat the balm as a moisture seal, and the serum as your PDRN step.
Can I use it under my eyes?
Several brands list the eye area as a use. Keep it off the lash line and away from the eye itself, especially with formulas that contain retinol.
