If your Olive Young haul suddenly looks different, you’re not imagining it. Since late May 2026, US shoppers have been moved from Olive Young Global to a separate US store with a smaller catalog, and sunscreen is where the Korea and US versions split the most. Here’s what changed, why, and how to tell which version you’re holding.
Quick answer
- Olive Young Global no longer ships to US addresses. US accounts were moved to a US-only store (us.oliveyoung.com) in late May 2026.
- The US store is smaller. At launch it listed 1,424 skincare products vs 4,078 on Global, as reported by JoongAng Daily.
- Sunscreens differ most. In the US, sunscreen is an over-the-counter drug, so it can only use FDA-listed UV filters. Olive Young says some US products “may differ in ingredients or formula.”
- Quick check: a “Drug Facts” box and “Broad Spectrum” on the label = US version. “PA++++” and no Drug Facts box = Korea version.
What actually changed at Olive Young in 2026
For years, Americans bought from Olive Young Global, the retailer’s English-language site that ships Korean stock overseas. That changed when Olive Young opened its first US store in Pasadena, California, on May 29, 2026, and launched a separate online mall for the US at the same time.
Here’s what Korean business press reported in the first weeks:
- Accounts were moved. Existing Global users in the US were migrated to the new US mall, and Global stopped delivering to US addresses.
- The catalog shrank. 1,424 skincare and 438 makeup listings on the US site, vs 4,078 and 2,097 on Global.
- Sun care shrank the most. A sun care search returned 797 items on Global and 92 on the US mall, about one-eighth. Olive Young said this came from complying with FDA rules.
- Membership reset. The US program has three tiers: Friend, Green (above $350) and Gold (above $600). Global’s top tier had needed $300 in six months.
Shoppers were not happy. One comment quoted by JoongAng Daily sums it up: “We don’t want products from the U.S. That’s the whole point.” Olive Young said it was “closely reviewing customer feedback.” A second store has since opened in Los Angeles, and Olive Young is also curating a K-beauty assortment for Sephora starting fall 2026.

Why US sunscreens are different: it’s the law, not the brand
This is the part most “Olive Young US review” posts skip. Korea and the US don’t even put sunscreen in the same category.
- In Korea, sunscreen is a functional cosmetic (기능성화장품). Brands can choose from a wide list of modern UV filters, which is part of why so many Korean sunscreens feel so light on the skin.
- In the US, sunscreen is an over-the-counter drug. A sunscreen can only use the active ingredients on the FDA’s sunscreen list, and the label must follow drug rules.
Filters found in many Korean sunscreens, such as Uvinul A Plus, Tinosorb M and Uvinul T 150, are not on the US list. So a brand that wants to sell in the US has two choices: skip the US, or make a US formula with different filters. That’s why the same product name can feel different in your hand.
In Korea, sunscreen is skincare. In the US, it’s a drug, and that one word changes the formula.
The one filter that just changed
On June 10, 2026, the FDA added bemotrizinol (sold as Tinosorb S) to the US sunscreen list, at up to 6%. The order took effect on August 9, 2026. The UK’s cosmetics trade body called it the first new sunscreen active added to the US list in over 20 years.
Don’t expect US shelves to change overnight. Bemotrizinol is one filter. Many Korean formulas pair it with others that are still not allowed, and every US version still has to be made, tested and labeled under US rules.
Korea version vs US version at a glance
| Korea version | US version | |
|---|---|---|
| Sunscreen is regulated as | Functional cosmetic | Over-the-counter drug |
| UVA on the label | PA+ to PA++++ | “Broad Spectrum” |
| UV filters | Wide list, incl. Uvinul A Plus, Tinosorb M | FDA list only (now incl. bemotrizinol) |
| Label panel | Full ingredient list | “Drug Facts” box with active ingredient % |
| Water-resistant claim | Often not tested | Must be tested to FDA rules |
| Where to buy | Olive Young stores and app in Korea | Olive Young US, Amazon US, Sephora |

What about serums, creams and toner pads?
Here’s the good news. A serum, cream or toner pad that makes no drug claims is a cosmetic in the US, not a drug, so it isn’t held to the sunscreen filter list. That gives brands much less reason to change the formula.
Still, “less reason” isn’t “never.” Before the US launch, Olive Young told The Korea Times that “if a brand chooses, certain ingredients or formulations may be adjusted,” for example by changing ingredient concentrations or using substitute ingredients. So the habit that serves you best is the same one we use for reading a cica label: compare the ingredient list (INCI) on your box with the Korean listing, top to bottom.
The other thing you lose: Korean-only sets
In Seoul, much of the value at Olive Young comes from “1+1” deals and 기획세트 (planned sets): the same product bundled with a refill, a mini or a bonus item for close to the single price. These are made for the Korean market and its sale calendar. That’s exactly what US shoppers were asking for: “We want the 1+1’s, special collabs, decent pricing, and access to what’s popular in Korea.”
How to get the Korea version in 2026
- Buy it in Seoul. Olive Young stores in tourist areas offer an instant tax refund at the register for purchases of ₩15,000 or more; bring your passport. If your dates are flexible, check the Olive Young app for its big seasonal sales.
- Olive Young US, for non-SPF skincare. Convenient and domestic. For sunscreens, check the box for a Drug Facts panel so you know you’re getting the US formula.
- Retailers that ship from Korea. Some still send Korean stock to the US. Shipping times and import charges vary, so check the final price at checkout.
- Amazon US. Check who the seller is and look at the label photos. A Korean-language box with PA++++ and no Drug Facts panel is an import, not a US formula.
What a Seoul shopper checks at the shelf
Korean shoppers rarely buy a sunscreen on the name alone. At the shelf, they check three things on the back of the box: the functional cosmetic mark (proof the UV claim was reviewed in Korea), the PA grade (PA++++ is the highest), and the expiry date (사용기한), especially on discounted sets.
The product name is marketing. The back of the box tells you which country it was made for.
FAQ
Does Olive Young Global still ship to the US?
No. Since May 29, 2026, US addresses are served by Olive Young US. Global still serves many other countries.
Is Olive Young US skincare the same as in Korea?
Often close, but not guaranteed. Olive Young says products sold in the US comply with FDA rules, so “some products may differ in ingredients or formula.” Sunscreens are the most likely to differ. For everything else, compare the ingredient list.
Is a US-version Korean sunscreen worse?
Not necessarily. It’s tested and labeled under US rules, but it uses a different filter mix, so the texture and finish can feel different from the Korean original. If you loved a sunscreen in Seoul, don’t assume the US box will feel the same.
Will the bemotrizinol decision bring Korean sunscreens to the US?
It makes it easier, because one widely used filter is now allowed. But many Korean formulas also rely on filters that are still not on the US list, so most will still need a US version.
